Google’s AI Overview Statistics (2025)

Googles AI Overview Statistics 1024x576 jpg

As of early 2025, AIOs show up in 13% of global searches and about 16% of all U.S. desktop keywords. Studies covering over 300,000 keywords reveal that AI Overviews can cut click-through rates by 34.5% for top-ranking pages, with some sites seeing traffic drops of 20% to 40% since their rollout.

For businesses and marketers, the real shift is in visibility. In eCommerce alone, 16% of searches now trigger AI Overviews, yet 80% of the sources cited don’t rank organically, and even holding a top-three position gives you just an 8% chance of being featured.

In this blog, we have a data-driven breakdown that looks at how AI Overviews are shaping search, what formats dominate, and which industries are most affected.

43% Of AI Overviews Point Back To Google

A recent study by SE Ranking looked into how Google’s AI Overviews work in five U.S. states (California, Texas, Colorado, New York, and Washington, D.C.)

The research analyzed 141,507 AI Overviews and found out that about 43% of the responses (61,437 times) included links that take users to Google’s search result pages, basically just showing websites already ranked on Google. The remaining 57% did not include any such links.

Google Shows AI Overview For 13% Of The Queries Globally

Google’s AI Overviews gained traction in early 2025. They appeared in 6.49% of queries in January, increased to 7.64% in February with an 18% rise, and then jumped to 13.14% in March, showing a 72% growth from the previous month.

AI Overviews Show For 16% Of All US Keywords On Desktop

AI Overviews now appear for around 16% of all desktop searches in the U.S. In SE Ranking’s index, they showed up in about 24.9 million out of 156 million total search terms. Similar trends were seen in other countries, too. For example, AI Overviews appeared in 16.5% of searches in India, 15.5% in Brazil, and 12.5% in the UK.

Number Of Links Per AI Overview Result

Most AI Overview responses include between 6 and 14 sources, suggesting this is the sweet spot Google aims for when curating content. For example, responses citing 9 sources were the most common, appearing in 6.55% of cases, followed closely by those with 8 sources at 6.47%. This shows that Google prefers to reference a moderate number of sources to build a well-rounded yet concise answer.

On the other end, responses with 0 or 1 source were extremely rare, less than 0.5% of the total, highlighting that Google has a minimum requirement to ensure the quality and credibility of its summaries.

Interestingly, as the number of sources increases beyond 14, the frequency starts to drop. For example, responses with 20 or more sources each accounted for under 2%, with the share dipping as low as 0.50% for 31 sources. This pattern suggests that Google tries to avoid overwhelming users and instead focuses on referencing only the most relevant content.

Ecommerce Search Visibility Is Shadowed By AI Overviews

An analysis of 25,000 ecommerce queries by Bartosz Góralewicz, founder of Onely, highlights that 16% of eCommerce searches now display an AI Overview, which accounts for about 13% of total search volume in this sector.

Ecommerce Search Visibility Is Shadowed By AI Overviews

Interestingly, 80% of the sources featured in these AI Overviews don’t rank organically for the query, meaning Google is pulling in sites beyond the usual top results. Even holding a top organic spot (#1 to #3) offers only an 8% chance of being cited within an AI Overview, signaling a major shift in how visibility is determined on search results pages.

Keywords That Trigger AI Overviews (By Intent)

Most AI Overviews triggered on desktop searches are tied to informational keywords, consistently making up nearly 90% or more of all triggers across recent months. In fact, their share peaked at 91.3% in January 2025 before settling at 88.1% in March 2025.

Other intent types are far less common. Commercial keywords account for 6–8% of AI Overview triggers, while transactional and navigational intents together rarely exceed 4% combined. This shows that Google’s AI Overviews are primarily designed to address questions and provide knowledge rather than drive direct purchases or navigation.

Impact of AI Overviews On Clicks

  • AI Overviews can reduce clicks by nearly 35%. A study analyzing over 300,000 keywords found a 34.5% drop in click-through rates (CTR) for top-ranking pages when AI Overviews were present.
  • Top-ranking sites are losing around 7% of clicks for certain queries. Websites in the top four positions for searches starting with terms like what, when, where, and how saw CTRs decline by over 7% after AI Overviews appeared.
  • Some websites have experienced traffic drops of 20 to 40%. Many business owners and marketers have reported major declines, with one SEO expert noting a 41% decrease in traffic in 2024 following the rollout of AI Overviews.

The Role Of Lists In AI Overviews

AI Overviews rely heavily on list-based formatting, with 78% of responses featuring either ordered or unordered lists. This structure helps make information easier to scan and digest, which is a core goal of these summaries.

Unordered lists are the most common, appearing in 61% of AI Overviews. They often show up even for queries like “Top X products” or “tips,” where the sources use numbered rankings. This shows Google’s preference for simplicity over strict ranking formats.

Ordered lists are far less frequent, found in only 12% of AI Overviews. These typically appear for step-by-step instructions, where the order of actions is important. Only 6% of AI Overviews combine both ordered and unordered lists, making that format relatively rare.

In about 22% of responses, AI Overviews skip lists altogether, instead presenting the information in short, skimmable paragraphs. This still keeps the answers digestible while avoiding the list format.

Ecommerce Links In AI Overviews

Only 0.3% of AI Overviews include ecommerce sources, as product-focused pages rarely appear in the summaries. However, when AI Overviews do pull from ecommerce sites, typically for product-related queries, 72% of those summaries feature around six links to shopping or product pages.

This points to one thing that Google’s AI Overviews can identify and prioritize relevant product links when needed, helping users quickly find shopping options without leaving the AI-generated response.

AI Mode Statistics

AI Mode vs. Traditional Search: Key Findings

Domain & URL Overlap

  • In a sample of 5,000 queries (over 150,000 citations), Google AI Mode generated responses with only about 51% domain overlap and 32% URL overlap compared to Google’s top‑10 organic search results.
  • By contrast, platforms like Perplexity showed much higher alignment (91% domain overlap / 82% URL overlap).

Sidebar & Link Behavior

  • 92% of AI Mode results include a sidebar containing links from roughly seven unique domains.
  • Around 7% of responses include links below the main answer, which typically align with traditional search results (89% domain overlap / 80% URL overlap).

Answer Length & Query Intent

  • Average AI Mode responses are approximately 300 words, longer than the 50‑word typical AI Overviews.
  • Responses to transactional or commercial queries are nearly twice as long as those for informational queries.

Citation Diversity

  • AI Mode cites a broader range of domains than ChatGPT, Perplexity, or similar tools, with Reddit appearing in over 68% of results, frequently alongside YouTube and Facebook.

Presence vs. Ranking

  • Only 32% of URLs appearing in AI Mode sidebars match entries in Google’s top‑10 search results.
  • This suggests that visibility in AI-generated responses now relies on being cited in those AI snippets, not just ranking within traditional search results.
